Joel Courtney’s ‘Assimilate’ Goes Digital in May
Gravitas Ventures has set a premiere date for “Assimilate,” a horror-thriller coming to theaters, VOD, and Digital HD on May 24th. Directed by John Murlowski, working off a script that he wrote with Steven Peterson, the film features Joel Courtney, Calum Worthy, Andi Matichak, Katherine McNamara, and Cam Gigandet.
In the story, BFFs Zach (Joel Courtney), Randy (Calum Worthy), and Kayla (Andi Matichak) discover that their neighbors are being killed and replaced by perfect copies of their victims. Their only chance to survive is to covertly record the invasion in a desperate attempt to warn the world.
The film won’t have a nationwide release since the box office is already overstuffed during the month of May but that means you have more options to see it. Fans of the genre can find the movie on VOD and digital platforms on the same day that it hits select theaters. To get a better understanding of the story, you can watch the official trailer below.
You can order the film on iTunes and have it ready for release day.
“Uglydolls” and “Long Shot” are releasing in theaters this weekend, followed by “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” “The Hustle,” “Poms,” and “Tolkien” the following week. On May 17th, “A Dog’s Journey” is opening against “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” and the drama “The Sun is Also a Star.” The week after is when Disney’s “Aladdin,” “Booksmart,” and “Brightburn” hit theaters across the country.
While May offers a long list of possible hits, there are only a few horror-thrillers on the schedule. Fans of the genre should keep “Assimilate” on the back-burner, and they will have something new to stream at the end of the month.
The cast of “Assimilate” also have busy schedules. Joel Courtney is returning for “The Kissing Booth 2,” and Andi Matichak is expected to star in Ivan Kavanagh’s horror-thriller “Son.” Katherine McNamara is wrapping up her last season of “Shadowhunters” this year on Freeform, but she will be featured in Brian Baugh’s romance drama “There You’ll Find Me” and Charlie Day’s comedy “El Tonto” with Kate Beckinsale and Travis Fimmel.
