Newslocker: Kissing Booth 2 Teaser Reunites Joey King & Joel Courtney for More Netflix Fun
Netflix has announced that The Kissing Booth 2 is officially happening. The streaming platform released a teaser video to get fans excited for the sequel, and it appears to have worked. Last year's adaptation of Beth Reekles was a huge success for Netflix, though it was panned by critics and currently holds a 13% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The streaming giant's CCO Ted Sarandos called the first installment "one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world."
Netflix claims that one in three viewers has re-watched The Kissing Booth, which is 30% higher than their normal average of repeat viewings. With that kind of success, it seems like a no-brainer to have the original cast return for The Kissing Booth 2. Vince Marcello (Teen Beach Movie) returns to direct the sequel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jay Arnold. The project is being produced by Marcello, Michele Weisler, Andrew Cole-Bulgina, and Edward Glauser.
At this point in time, no story details have been announced as of this writing, bit it is imagined that The Kissing Booth 2 will have a similar premise to the original. The first movie focuses on two best friends, Elle Evans (Joey King) and Lee Flynn (Joel Courtney) who have a lot of rules about their friendship. Elle starts dating Lee's older brother Noah (Jacob Elordi), which is a violation of rule number 9: relatives totally off limits. The romantic teen comedy unravels from there and gets even more complicated when the duo decides to start a kissing booth for a school carnival.
Beth Reekles' 2011 young adult novel The Kissing Booth was originally published on Wattpad, which is an online community for readers and writers to publish user-generated stories in different genres. The story won the Watty Award for Most Popular Teen Fiction in Wattpad's annual writing contest and by 2012, the story had amassed over 19 million views. In 2013, the story was published by Penguin Random House and became a big seller, which is how Netflix came on board to adapt her original story. It isn't clear if Reekles will be involved with The Kissing Booth 2 at this time.
While Netflix touts The Kissing Booth as a great streaming success, the movie was torched by critics, with many calling it sexist and a few noting that it is a "regressive look at relationships that highlights the worst impulses of the genre." The movie and book have been criticized for being too cliché and too predictable, but the streaming platform saw huge numbers when they released it back in May 2018. There is no release date set for The Kissing Booth 2, but Netflix is confident that it will be just as big, if not bigger, than the first installment. From Popsugar: Pucker Up, Kissing Booth Fans — We're Getting a Sequel!
If you thought The Kissing Booth took over Netflix before, wait until the sequel arrives! That's right fans, the Netflix original that put the wacky in "wacky rom-com" is coming back to your screens with a second installment.
Ringing in Valentine's Day with its signature flair, Netflix dropped the announcement video on Feb. 14, which shows Kissing Booth stars Joey King and Joel Courtney building that infamous booth together. While the teaser is unarguably adorable, it sheds no light whatsoever on what the sequel could be about. Fortunately, the drop does let us know that all three stars, including Jacob Elordi, will return for the follow-up, reuniting the trio that made the original such a breakout hit. Check out the video above and get ready — The Kissing Booth 2 is already in production!
From Bustle: 'The Kissing Booth 2' Is Officially Coming To Netflix & The Announcement Video Is Almost As Sweet As The Rom-Com Itself
On Thursday, Feb. 14, Netflix announced that The Kissing Booth 2 is coming to the streaming platform — and its the Valentine's Day gift that you never knew you needed. Yes, the sequel to The Kissing Booth is officially happening. And it will reunite stars Joey King, Joel Courtney, and Jacob Elordi as they continue the tale, which is based on Beth Reekles' coming-of-age novel of the same name. Details surrounding the film still remain scarce. However, a press release reveals that the film is already in production, meaning fans could possibly have a finished product sometime this year.
In addition to the news, Netflix released a promo video that is sure to warm the hearts of rom-com fans everywhere. The clip features King and Courtney as they collaborate on building a handcrafted kissing booth. After the project is constructed, Courtney tells King, "I think we're just missing one thing," as he pulls out a wooden-piece shaped into the number 2. King snatches from him and hammers it next to the words "kissing booth" as they simultaneously exclaim, "nailed it" while high-fiving over their accomplishment. The snippet moves forward as the two dance in excitement about film's sequel. The pair, who play besties in the film, appear to be having a great time until the number falls off of the booth onto King's head while Courtney teasingly laughs.
Their camaraderie in the clip makes it clear that King and Courtney will pick up right where they left off in the inaugural film, reprising their roles as BFFs, Elle and Lee. With details surrounding the narrative still unclear, it is not known if Lee's older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi) and Elle will still be together. It's quite possible that they've broken things off since fans saw Noah go off the college in the first film. Netflix seemingly intended to build suspense surrounding their relationship status by keeping Elordi out of the Booth 2 announcement video altogether. (King and Elordi are also reported to be a couple in real life, although there have been recent rumors of a split.)
As far as the sequel's narrative is concerned: filmmakers could potentially draw inspiration from Reekles' companion novel The Beach House, which takes place during the summer before Noah goes off to college. That storyline, however, would take some tweaking since that's not quite where the first movie left off.
Although the plan for a Kissing Booth sequel has, obviously, been in motion for some time, King managed to play it cool when asked about the possibility of KB 2 just days ago.
"Right now, we're not really sure," King told TV Guide at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Monday, Feb. 11, "[The cast] would love for that to happen, but everything is still up in the air. We're still waiting on [Netflix]."
All-in-all, it seems that the sequel was an inevitable choice for the streaming giant following its Spring 2018 debut. Last May, Netflix president Ted Sarandos' told Deadline that The Kissing Booth is "one of the most watched movies in the world right now."

From Variety: ‘The Kissing Booth 2’ Is Coming to Netflix, With Original Cast Returning
Pucker up. “The Kissing Booth 2” is happening on Netflix, one of its stars, Joel Courtney, said on Twitter on Thursday. The sequel will reunite many of the team that made the original breakout hit, including Joey King and Jacob Elordi.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! It’s official!,” Courtney told his Twitter followers. “YUP!!! WE ARE GETTING A SEQUEL!!!,” said his co-star Joey King.
The YA-skewed movie went big on Netflix with the streamer’s content chief, Ted Sarandos, saying that at one point it was “one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world.”
Plot details for “The Kissing Booth 2” are thin on the ground. Indie producer Komixx, which has carved out a niche in the sought-after YA space, will make the new film.
The first movie was adapted from a Beth Reekles novel, which was originally self-published on the Wattpad digital platform. It was directed by Vince Marcello, who will also helm the new movie, from a screenplay written by him and Jay Arnold.
It will be produced by Marcello and Michele Weisler, who was also on the first film, with Komixx’s Andrew Cole-Bulgin and Edward Glauser.
Pre-production is underway, and shooting is expected to begin later this year. There are no confirmed dates, but the film is likely to drop on Netflix in 2020.
