Joey King, Joel Courtney and more stars of the Netflix romantic comedy also reveal how the new cast members shake up the film.
After The Kissing Booth became the most rewatched Netflix original movie of 2018, stars Joey King (The Act), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) and Joel Courtney (Super 8) are back for a sequel. The cast opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about how the film builds on the success of the first, while still staying true to the youthful spirit of the original.
"This sequel, if I may say so myself, I think is better than the first movie," said King, who plays Elle and is also an executive producer of the film. "We wanted to give fans something to remember, something that is even bigger and better than the movie that they fell in love with initially, something that exceeded all expectations and still remained true to the absolute fun, loving, ridiculously silly nature of the first movie. And I just think that, not to toot our own horn, but I kind of think that we might have hit it out of the park or whatever."
The sequel sees Noah, played by Elordi, head off to college at Harvard, far away from girlfriend Elle, who is about to start her senior year of high school in Los Angeles. As the pair try to maintain their bicoastal relationship, two new characters, Marco and Chloe, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, respectively, put their future together in jeopardy.
"Noah's away to college and now it's a long distance relationship, so kind of tough for Elle, and Marco's the new kid at school who kind of offers different things for her," said Perez. "He's artistic. He dances. He plays the guitar. He sings. It's a kind of whole different kind of guy than she's used to. And so when they finally have this little meet-cute and they start this relationship, this friendship, I think she starts questioning herself. Does she love Noah? Does she like Marco? What's her future going to be?"
"She instantly becomes best friends with Noah and she is very elevated," Richardson-Sellers said of her character, Harvard student Chloe. "She's this very intelligent, very dynamic and sort of confident, can control any room that she's in [type of] person who Elle gets a little bit jealous of when she sort of sees that this close friendship has formed so far away from her. You know, long distance is so hard and I think that's what this film does really well is it sort of exposes the stresses that long distance can put through both of our characters. And it also exposes the assumptions that can be made as a result, and what happens when there's not great communication among partners. So, it was super fun to come in and stir the pot up a bit."
Since the film explores the complexities of a long distance relationship, the cast also shared what they think are the keys to maintaining long distance love.
"Communication," said Courtney. "Having been there and done that in a long distance relationship, communication is key."
"He's a hundred percent right," added King. "Communication, being honest with each other. Trying to make that person feel like their role in your life is as special as possible, especially if you really care about them."

Sure, Netflix's The Kissing Booth is filled with dramatic romances, but one of the best parts of the film is the friendship between Elle and Lee. When Joey King and Joel Courtney aren't showing off their incredible chemistry in the films, they're goofing off with each other offscreen. From striking a pose on the red carpet to dancing in hilarious Instagram videos, their real-life friendship would probably make their own characters jealous.
In an interview with Backstage, Joel added that his friendship with Joey really helped him jump back into character for the sequel. "I was a little nervous to see if I was able to pull it off or not," he said. "The second I read the script and Joey [King] and I got together on it, I was like, no, this is not going to be an issue, bringing a character back is not going to be as hard. I can see it being more difficult for other things, but the real-life friendship that Joey and I have really allows for us to just go back to our characters and comfortably dive back in." As we wait for The Kissing Booth 2 to drop on July 24, see some of Joey and Joel's best friendship moments ahead.
When Netflix's The Kissing Booth came out in 2018, fans' biggest concern was what would happen if you hooked up with your BFF's hot older sibling at the school carnival. But as high school draws to a close for these characters, things are about to get more serious. When The Kissing Booth 2 arrives July 24, Joel Courtney hints there will be growing pains and big changes.
The Kissing Booth centers around Elle Evans (Joey King), her bestie Lee Flynn (Courtney), and Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi) — aka Lee's brother and Elle's new BF. At the end of the first film, fans saw Elle and Noah agreeing to give long distance a try as Noah left to attend Harvard, and Lee getting more serious with his girlfriend Rachel (Meganne Young). The sequel picks up about a month after Noah heads off to college, with Lee and Elle starting their senior year of high school and thinking about their own post-grad plans.
While jumping back into the role of Lee for The Kissing Booth 2 was exciting, Courtney admits he definitely felt the pressure to please fans who loved the first movie so much. "I've never been in the position where I've gotten to pick a role back up. I've never done like, a Season 1 of a TV show and then gone back for Season 2," he tells Elite Daily. "I remember actually being a little nervous to fail because there’s so many fans that love this character and this friendship."
After reconnecting with King for filming, however, Courtney's fears quickly evaporated. "Day 1 on the set with Joey for The Kissing Booth 2 [was] like, 'Oh yeah, we’re back,'" he says. "It was like putting on your favorite jacket. It just like, slips right on and you know how to wear it."
Courtney's character won't have it so easy in the movie, though. "Lee is in for a tough year ... There’s a lot of growth coming Lee’s way and there’s a lot of hard times that teach good lessons to a young man at that age," he says.
Though Courtney doesn't give too much away about what's in store for Lee, it sounds like his story will largely focus on his love life. "It's a juggling act, you know? You have a best friend who happens to be a girl, and you have a girlfriend and, like... Who do you spend time with? How does that relationship work out?" he ponders. Further hinting Lee and Rachel are going to have tough times ahead, he added: "[Meganne Young and I] had some of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever filmed."
It's not just Lee who's facing hard choices in The Kissing Booth 2; every character will have their own struggles. "[It's] senior year and life is kind of a stepping-off point in terms of like, 'What do we do from here?' These characters have huge decisions to make," Courtney explains. "You're 18 and everything is entangled with everything else in your life."
Joel Courtney may not have found love with Elle in his role as Lee in Netflix's The Kissing Booth, but don't worry, because off screen, he's happily engaged to Mia Scholink. It's unclear when Joel and Mia first got together, but they have actually known each other since they were kids. The 24-year-old actor popped the question to Mia this past Valentine's Day, and naturally, they shared photos of the romantic engagement on Instagram. "This woman right here, lemme tell you a lil bit about her. She is kind, patient, hysterical, forgiving, so beautiful she makes my heart stop, honest, and joyful. I love you @mia_scholink and I am so blessed to have you as my fiancé," Joel wrote. Mia expressed similar sentiments in a short and sweet message, writing, "ENGAGED to my best friend!!! 💍 Can't wait to marry you." As we wait for more details on their upcoming nuptials, see Joel and Mia's romance in photos ahead.
