From Paste Magazine : Most Popular on Netflix: A Look at Today's Top 10

Netflix has been notoriously stingy with its data. Even directors and showrunners have had a hard time gauging if what they’d put out into the world was reaching its intended audience. With the recent advent of the Netflix Top 10, though, we can now get at least one little peek behind the curtain. The list of Netflix’s daily Top 10 Most Popular indicates an omnivorous appetite among the Netflix faithful, from low-budget thrillers to blockbusters, animated kids movies to docu-series of every stripe. Here are the entries for July 27 (only some of which we can recommend) of the most popular TV shows and movies on Netflix.

I am not the target market for Netflix’s teen rom-com The Kissing Booth. Neither, apparently, were critics. But that doesn’t really matter because its target demo liked the original enough to shoot its college-bound sequel straight to the top of today’s most popular on Netflix. And this time, they nearly doubled the Rotten Tomatoes score to a whopping 30%. At this pace, The Kissing Booth 3, already scheduled for 2021, might reach 47%.

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/27/2020 -- Do a good job and they'll ask you back. This proves true for Joel Courtney, who will reprise his role as Lee Flynn in the teen romantic comedy The Kissing Booth 2, released Friday.

Courtney introduced the character in The Kissing Booth, the teen romantic comedy that was distributed by Netflix and proved to be the most re-watched films of 2018.

Courtney, who is familiar to film lovers from his lead role in the J.J. Abrams-directed and Steven Spielberg-produced Super-8, was trained in his craft at The Playground Acting Conservatory. The Playground Acting Conservatory is a young actors studio in Century City founded by renowned acting coach Gary Spatz (The Mickey Mouse Club, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Everybody Loves Raymond).

Spatz, who is considered one of the top child acting coaches in the world, first met the promising young actor when Joel Courtney enrolled at The Playground. After only a few classes, Courtney was invited to audition for Super-8, and Spatz worked overtime to get him ready for the opportunity.

Courtney nailed it.

"It was exciting to see a young actor grow and develop so quickly," Spatz said. "Joel had 11 callbacks and multiple screen tests for the Super-8 role, and everyone had a feeling about him."

That feeling, the result of Spatz's 25 years of experience in the industry, was spot-on. It resulted in a 2012 Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. Though Courtney, a resident of Moscow, Idaho, was just dipping his toe into the acting pool when he enrolled at The Playground, it turned out the water was fine, and he decided to stick around California and learn what he could about his craft.

After getting his start in Super-8, Courtney has worked steadily in film, but he found one of his most distinctive roles as The Kissing Booth's Lee Flynn — friend, romantic partner, and kissing booth coordinator. It's a popcorn movie, in that audiences can't seem to stop consuming it, according to Netflix viewing stats.

It's no wonder that the production arm of Netflix was quick to follow up the successful production with its sequel, The Kissing Booth 2, where Courtney's character weighs his feelings for his friend Elle while preparing to head off to college.

"We could not be prouder of Joel," said Spatz. "Audiences have determined that he is someone they want to see on screen, and that draw has been apparent to us from day one. We are so excited to see him continue in film, and we're eager to see where he goes from here."

The Kissing Booth 2 stars Joey King, Joel Courtney, and Jacob Elordi, and it is based on a book written by an actual teen at the time, Beth Reekles of Wales. It is directed by Vince Marcello with a screenplay by Marcello and Jay Arnold. Its production company is Komixx Entertainment.

Netflix announced the third installment of The Kissing Booth is on the way. The announcement was made soon after the second season of the rom-com premiered on Netflix. The online streaming platform revealed on July 26 that The Kissing Booth is ready!

The Kissing Booth will return with the original star cast including Joel Courtney, Joey King, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Molly Ringwald, Jacob Elordi, Meganne Young, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers. The Kissing Booth 2 had kept a live event on YouTube where the entire cast appeared.

While fans had various questions to ask their idols, there was a big surprise for the fans hidden in the live event. Courtney revealed that the shooting of the second and third season was already filmed before the pandemic started.

However, King admitted that it was one of the most difficult secrets to hide. The 20-year-old actress, also, said that it was tricky for the entire cast to shoot as each day they use to film both the season scenes. The cast members, also, showed gratitude towards their fans for supporting the work.

The cast is, also, excited that with the help of their fans they are able to go on with the next season. "The explosion of love has been so real," King said. Beth Reekles, a British author, self-published a novel about coming-of-age on which the rom-com was originally created.

Netflix revealed that the first installment of The Kissing Booth became the most re-watched film on the platform in 2018. Komixx Entertainment and British film helped The Kissing Booth to get adapted in a movie in association with Random House Children's Screen Entertainment.

The Kissing Booth 3 is also directed by Vince Marcello like the other two installments released before. The second installment of The Kissing Booth revolved around Noah Flynn's character portrayed by Elordi. The 23-year-old actor is going to Harvard college and his girlfriend Elle Evans's character portrayed by King is ready to begin her high school in Los Angeles.

Due to their situation, the couple is forced to continue their relationship in long-distance. The storyline focus on their challenges and how their future seems to change. There are new characters introduced amid this jeopardy.

Chloe and Marco are two characters entered in the second season portrayed by Richardson-Sellers and Perez, respectively. While The Kissing Booth 2 is launched a few days back, Netflix announced that The Kissing Booth 3 is ready to rock in 2021.
