"Hollywood Directed Movie Shot in St. Louis Gives Hope"
Joel Courtney stars as motivational speaker John O’Leary in Soul on Fire, a powerful Hollywood film based on O’Leary’s real-life survival story. Premiering at St. Louis’ Hi-Pointe Theater on July 8, the film shines a spotlight on courage, faith, and the human spirit.
Filmed entirely in St. Louis, Soul on Fire captures the city’s heart—its people, its scenery, and its soul. The story follows O’Leary’s journey after sustaining life-threatening burns as a child, eventually becoming an internationally recognized speaker. Joel portrays John during his college years and rise to public life, bringing authenticity and emotional weight to every scene.
In a post-screening interview with Spectrum News, O’Leary shared, “I have now watched this film more than 100 times… every time I watch, it’s a little bit better.” He hopes viewers walk away inspired and reminded that “life is not perfect, it’s not easy, but it is good.”
The film also stars DeVon Franklin, William H. Macy, James McCracken, and Masey McLain. Directed by Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer, Reagan), the production used real locations like Mercy Hospital, Saint Louis University, and even O’Leary’s actual home. McNamara said the community’s warmth made filming unforgettable: “I want to move here. I had so much fun.”
With messages of resilience and hope, Soul on Fire is set to release nationwide this October. Until then, follow Joel for exclusive behind-the-scenes moments and reflections on this transformative role.
