Joel Courtney Transforms Into John O’Leary in Soul on Fire — In Theaters October 10

Joel Courtney, best known for Super 8, The Kissing Booth trilogy, and Jesus Revolution, takes on one of his most inspiring roles yet. In the upcoming film Soul on Fire, Joel portrays John O’Leary — a burn survivor whose story of resilience has touched millions around the world. The movie hits theaters October 10, 2025.

In a new behind-the-scenes video, Joel shares what it took to embody John O’Leary on screen. From detailed makeup and costume work, to studying body language, and connecting with the man behind the story, every step of the transformation was intentional.

“Becoming John was more than just an acting challenge — it was an opportunity to honor someone who’s inspired countless lives,” Joel says.

SOUL ON FIRE, a movie from SOUL SURFER director Sean McNamara and starring JESUS REVOLUTION’s Joel Courtney, will release in theaters Oct. 10, 2025.

Based on a true story recounted in John O’Leary’s memoir On Fire, “The story follows O’Leary’s journey after sustaining life-threatening burns as a child, eventually becoming an internationally recognized speaker,” Courtney’s website describes.

Courtney stars as O’Leary. Other cast members include John Corbett (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING), Stephanie Szostak (A MILLION LITTLE THINGS), Masey McLain (THE BAXTERS), DeVon Franklin (JESUS REVOLUTION) and William H. Macy (FARGO).

“…this film is an emotional and faith-filled portrait of resilience as O’Leary not only battles to survive but ultimately discovers what it means to truly live. From frontline workers to family members, and the support of the wider community, this film is a celebration of heroes,” a synopsis added.

The movie was written by Gregory Poirier. J. Todd Harris, Margaret French Isaac, David Brookwell and McNamara serve as producers on the project. Executive producers include Linda B. Huntington, O’Leary, Terry Schnuck, Michael W. Riney, Quirsis V. Riney and Poirier.

Courntey just attended the movie’s press day, sharing moments from the event on Instagram.

“Press day for @soulonfiremovie!!! In theaters October 10th!!!  Rocking @originusa head to toe. 100% Made in America 💪🏼 Thank you @macpowell for the perfect song,” he wrote as Third Day’s song “Soul On Fire” played in the background.

In April, when Courtney announced the project, he said, “This story has changed my life and whole life perspective,” calling O’Leary “One of the most incredible, inspiring, and coolest people I’ve ever met.”

Filmed entirely in St. Louis, Soul on Fire captures the city’s heart—its people, its scenery, and its soul. The story follows O’Leary’s journey after sustaining life-threatening burns as a child, eventually becoming an internationally recognized speaker. Joel portrays John during his college years and rise to public life, bringing authenticity and emotional weight to every scene.

In a post-screening interview with Spectrum News, O’Leary shared, “I have now watched this film more than 100 times… every time I watch, it’s a little bit better.” He hopes viewers walk away inspired and reminded that “life is not perfect, it’s not easy, but it is good.”

The film also stars DeVon Franklin, William H. Macy, James McCracken, and Masey McLain. Directed by Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer, Reagan), the production used real locations like Mercy Hospital, Saint Louis University, and even O’Leary’s actual home. McNamara said the community’s warmth made filming unforgettable: “I want to move here. I had so much fun.”
